Inversion Space and Outpost Space, startups specializing in reentry vehicle technology, recently received more than $100 million in funding from the Pentagon. These companies are developing technology that would allow reusable capsules to store supplies in orbit, ready for deployment, to deliver critical cargo quickly and accurately: such as medical equipment and supplies, weapons, and/or drones anywhere on the planet.
The military's interest in descent capsule technology is closely tied to the US Air Force's ambitious Rocket Cargo program. Its purpose is to study the use of space launch vehicles for transporting cargo over long distances. By the way, it is within its framework that they plan to involve Starship of the SpaceX company.
Reusable descent capsules have become a cornerstone of this effort, as they allow cargo to be delivered by controlled vaulting from orbit and descent to Earth—at the right time and to a specific area.
