It's time for a generational change for Citroen's biggest crossover. Following the commercial launch of the new Citroen C3 and Citroen C3 Aircross, the company can now focus on the car higher up the range.
The novelty is designed to play a leading role in the ambitious process of transition to a fully electric model range. The new generation C5 Aircross is expected to be fully electric.
What is known?
Last year, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares confirmed that the new C5 Aircross will be 100% electric. The second generation of the Citroen crossover will bet on electrification at the highest level.
Now the new generation Citroen C5 Aircross, the development process of which has begun, has appeared in the first spy photos.
The tests are taking place in southern Europe, where Citroen usually conducts summer car tests. Currently it is about a test mule based on the Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid, which can be found in dealerships.
At first glance, it may go unnoticed because it looks like a regular plug-in hybrid C5 Aircross. However, there are a few details that show this is an all-electric car. First, it's a huge battery that sticks out a bit from the bottom of the car. And the second, but no less important, is the absence of an exhaust system. Motor.es spy photographers confirmed that the car was running in electric mode the entire time.
Under the hood
Built on the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, the new electric C5 Aircross is codenamed “CR3”. On a technical level, it will be related to the new Peugeot E-3008 and Opel Grandland Electric.
Unlike the mentioned models, the new generation C5 Aicross should only be in electric format.
The "heart" of the new ë-C5 Aircross will be an 86 kWh lithium-ion battery. Equipped with a 400-volt architecture, it will be able to travel more than 500 kilometers on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle. The assortment will include front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions.
The debut of the new electric C5 Aircross is scheduled for 2025. It is expected in the second half of the same year. Either way, it will hit dealers as a 2026 model.
