Edmundo González left for Spain
Edmundo Gonzalez left his homeland after the prosecutor's office issued a warrant for his arrest.
Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez, who is claiming victory in the country's presidential election, has traveled to Spain after being threatened with arrest in his homeland. This was announced by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albarez, on the X social network on Sunday, September 8.
"Edmundo Gonzalez is flying to Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane at his request. The Spanish government is committed to the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans," he wrote.
As you know, presidential elections were held in Venezuela on July 28. The country's Electoral Council officially declared Nicolas Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, the winner. In turn, the opposition announced the sure victory of Edmundo Gonzalez.
After the announcement of the results of the presidential elections, spontaneous rallies began in the country. Their members believe that the authorities falsified the results of the vote in favor of Maduro.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken stated that the US considers Gonzalez to be the winner of the elections in Venezuela. And the European Union did not recognize the democratic legitimacy of Maduro as the president of Venezuela.
