Calendar of church holidays in October 2024

In October, we have many religious and Ukrainian national holidays. As a reminder, a new church calendar was adopted in Ukraine from September 2023. So Christian holidays have new dates, from now on they are celebrated 13 days earlier. What are the new dates for the October holidays:

October 1 - Pokrovy

We will celebrate the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on October 1. The holiday is very important for Christians of the Eastern rite. On this day, it is customary to go to church and pray to the icon of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. According to the old calendar, the holiday fell on October 14.

October 2 - Day of the holy martyrs Cyprian and Justina

On October 2, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy martyr Kyprian and the martyr Justyna. According to legend, Cyprian was a sorcerer and wanted to make Justina fall in love with a non-Christian by magic. But her faith in Jesus Christ saved her. Then Cyprian himself believed. Later they were both executed for their Christian faith. According to the old calendar, the holiday was on October 15.

October 3 - Saint Dionysius

On October 3, Christians honor Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. According to the Bible, Dionysius was a disciple of the Apostle Paul, later becoming a bishop. He wrote several works that were of great importance for the development of Christian philosophy. He was killed by the pagans, considered a saint. Previously, Dionysius Day fell on October 16. On this day, the day of the angel Denis is celebrated.

October 6 - Apostle Thomas

Apostle Thomas was one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. It was about him that they called "Thomas the unbeliever" because he did not believe that Christ was resurrected. Thomas was a preacher of Christianity and converted many people to the Christian faith. For this he was killed by the Indian ruler. Previously, the Day of the Apostle Thomas was celebrated on October 19.

October 9 - Apostle Jacob

On October 9, the church honors the apostle Jacob Alfeiv. Apostle Jacob was one of the twelve closest disciples of Jesus Christ. Previously, the day was celebrated on October 22.

October 17 – Kuzma and Demyan

According to the new calendar, the church celebrates the day of Kuzma and Demyan (Cosma and Damian) on October 17. The twin brothers were doctors. They converted people to the Christian faith, for which they were arrested and sentenced to torture and the death penalty. According to the old calendar, the day of the saints fell on November 1.

October 18 - the evangelist Luke

According to the new calendar, the Ukrainian church honors the memory of the holy apostle and evangelist Luke on October 18. Saint Luke was one of the 70 apostles, a companion of the apostle Paul. Previously, Saint Luke's Day was celebrated on October 31.

October 19 - Dmitriv Memorial Saturday

Dmitrov Saturday is celebrated by the Orthodox among other parental Saturdays throughout the year. This day is also called "family" or "grandfather's Saturday" - they remember the dead, visit cemeteries and pray in churches for repose.

October 20 - St. Artemius, the Cathedral of All Healers

The holy great martyr Artemios was a warrior, the Roman ruler of Egypt from the early Christians. He was sentenced to martyrdom by the Roman emperor. Previously, Saint Artemius was celebrated on November 2. This holiday is also considered the day of the angel Artem.

October 23 - Apostle Jacob

On October 23, the church honors the memory of Jacob, one of the 70 apostles, who became the first bishop of Jerusalem. Not to be confused with James of Alphaeus, an apostle from the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ (October 9).

October 24 - icons of the Mother of God "Joy of all the sorrowful"

The icon "Joy of all the sorrowful" is famous for its miracle work. It depicts the Mother of God in the glow of a mandorla, surrounded by the poor and angels. On October 24, the Orthodox Church honors the mentioned icon.

October 26 - Dimitriy of Solunsky

On October 26, Christians honor their great martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica. The saint came from the Greek city of Thessaloniki, died for his Christian beliefs. Belongs to the most revered Christian saints. According to the Gregorian calendar, the holiday is November 8.

October 27 is the Day of Ukrainian writing and language

October 27 is the Day of the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler. A special day for Ukraine, because Nestor was a Kyiv chronicler during the time of Kyivan Rus. That is why Ukrainians also celebrate the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language on October 27. Nestor the Chronicler wrote "The Tale of Bygone Years", which is now a testimony of many historical events. "The Tale of Bygone Years" was completed in 1113. Nestor died the following year and was buried in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. According to the Gregorian calendar - November 9.

October 28 – Dimitriy (Tuptala) of Rostovskyi

Dimytriy Tuptalo was a Ukrainian church figure. He was born in Kyiv region, studied at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. A few years before his death, due to poor health, he was appointed Metropolitan of Rostov. Wrote many theological works. The Metropolitan is honored by the Orthodox Church.

October 29 - Saint Anastasia of Rome

On October 29, the Christian church honors the holy martyr Anastasia, who lived in Rome. A beautiful young girl was subjected to terrible torture and sent to the death penalty because she did not renounce the Christian faith. Previously, Saint Anastasia's Day was celebrated on November 11.

October 31 is the anniversary of the death of the last chieftain, Peter Kalnyshevskyi

Petro Kalnyshevskyi, the last basket chieftain of Zaporizhia Sich, died at the age of 113 in the Solovetsky Monastery, where he was kept in inhumane conditions by order of Tsarina Catherine II after her destruction of Zaporizhia Sich. In 2008, the Ukrainian Church canonized the chieftain as the martyr Peter the Great Sufferer.
