The Hungarians' "favorites" in terms of accession are Montenegro and Turkey
Voters of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party are in favor of Turkey joining the union.
Hungarian citizens in 2024 became less favorable to EU enlargement compared to last year. They are most skeptic about the idea of Ukraine's membership. This was reported by the Hungarian publication Telex with reference to a survey by the Policy Solutions think tank.
Last year, the majority of respondents supported the accession of several candidate countries, but in 2024, only 45% of respondents were positive about Montenegro, the country with the most support.
Among the candidate countries, Hungarians least support the accession of Ukraine — 61% of Hungarians reject the idea of Ukraine's membership.
Ukraine's accession to the EU is the most popular among voters of the opposition party Tysa: 34% for and 53% against. Voters of this party most wanted to see Montenegro among the EU members (50%), while voters of Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party want Turkey to join.
The survey found that most Hungarians are tired of the debate between the EU and the government, with two-thirds of respondents believing that the government should meet all the milestones set for the allocation of financial resources. The mass media notes that this figure has not changed since 2023.
Part of the pro-government voters - 40% - reject the idea of the country's concession to the European Commission, and 54% say that the government should make concessions in order to receive EU funds.
