Violation cameras have become an effective tool for reducing the number of traffic accidents on city streets and highways in many countries. Ukraine also uses these technologies, but the capabilities of domestic cameras have certain limitations. The mato publication tells what they can do and why.

RBC-Ukraine notes that automatic surveillance cameras are combined into a single system in Ukraine. The war situation affects their distribution: new cameras are installed in certain places, while in others they are dismantled. Total the number of these devices tends to grow. Currently, there are 250 to 270 cameras in the country, which are located in 25 settlements, as well as on highways passing through 15 regions.

What can photo fixation cameras in Ukraine

Automatic control cameras, which are installed on the roads of Ukraine, are able to register various violations in real time. These violations include those that can be detected and handled by specialized software. Among them are exceeding the set speed limit, improper stopping and parking (including parking on public transport lanes), running a red light, crossing the oncoming lane, driving on sidewalks, as well as violating the rules of crossing railroad crossings.

Currently, video recording systems in Ukraine are configured only for automatic detection of speeding. This was decided by the officials responsible for their activities. Each device records the speed limit for its section of road and is activated to record when it detects a vehicle exceeding that limit. It is worth noting that only two cameras in Ukraine, which are found in Kyiv, can also record violations of traffic rules on public transport lanes, for which a fine of 510 hryvnias is provided.

As for the speed limit, the cameras are configured to take into account the possibility of exceeding the speed by 20 km/h above the "legal" speed, which is indicated in the traffic rules and on road signs.

Why do they want to teach photography cameras in Ukraine

In Ukraine, existing cameras theoretically have the potential to detect various traffic violations, if they are equipped with the latest software. For example, a few years ago, the system in Kyiv was already able to automatically recognize car numbers and check them against the database of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, identifying vehicles that were wanted. In addition, the cameras had the ability to record violations, such as running a red light or crossing a double center line.

However, these functions are currently not activated, possibly due to the need for human intervention in the process of issuing fines. The police officer must sign the administrative protocol after checking the photo of the violation. Also, the number of employees in the Information Processing Center should be increased for the effective operation of the extended functionality of the cameras.

Nevertheless, there are already a couple of cameras in Kyiv on Mikhnovskyi Boulevard that monitor and fine drivers who try to bypass traffic jams by using the lane for public transport.

What is the fine "issued" by the photo-fixation camera

According to the Ukrainian legislation (KupAP), in case of exceeding the speed by 21 km/h or more, drivers are fined in the amount of 340 hryvnias. If the driver exceeds the speed by more than 50 km/h, the fine increases to 1700 hryvnias.

Interestingly, in the case of fines recorded by automatic cameras, a 50% discount is provided. If a person pleads guilty and pays the fine within 10 days after receiving the notice, he has the option to pay only half of the amount established by the Criminal Code. At the same time, ignoring the payment of the fine for more than 30 days may lead to the intervention of the enforcement service, which may have unpleasant consequences for the violator.
