The Orthodox Church of Ukraine reminded us of which religious holidays we will celebrate in August.
"Throughout August, we will celebrate several major church holidays in honor of our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. These holidays are highly respected by our Ukrainian people," says the OCU.
The very first great holiday of August is already on the 1st: Carrying out the honest trees of the life-giving Cross of the Lord. And on the same day, the commemoration of the seven Maccabee martyrs, their mother Solomonia, and their teacher Eleazar falls. On August 1, we also begin the two-week Assumption fast.
August 6 – Transfiguration of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ. On this holiday, according to tradition, we will consecrate apples and other ripe fruits to bless the harvest and to thank God for the blessings given to us from the earth.
We will celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15. And the next day – Transfer from Edessa to Constantinople of the non-manmade image (table cloth) of our Lord Jesus Christ. It commemorates an important event: the miraculous creation of the first ever icon of Jesus Christ through the touch of His face to linen cloth.
At the end of the month - the Cathedral of the Reverend Fathers of Kyiv-Pechersk, who rested in the Far Caves (August 28) and the Beheading of the Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John (August 29). On the day of the martyrdom of John the Forerunner, the Church established a strict one-day fast.
