The United States insisted on including the Russian oppositionist Oleksii Navalny, who died in a Russian prison, in the list of prisoners exchanged between Russia and Western countries.
As reported by Ukrinform's own correspondent, Jake Sullivan, adviser to the US president on national security issues, told reporters on Thursday.
He said that the US was working with partners on an agreement that would include Navalny.
"Unfortunately, he died..." said Sullivan. — On the same day when he died, I saw Evan's parents (Hershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was released as a result of an exchange from a Russian prison, ed.). I told them that the president was determined to get it done, despite this tragic news, and that we would work day and night to get to that day."
The councilor noted that this work has been ongoing for the past few months and ended on August 1.
The mass media published the list of prisoners who were exchanged. Russia received Russian fraudsters, spies and killers in exchange for political prisoners.
Navalny went to prison in 2021 and was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison after multiple trials.
He died in prison in February. The Russian opposition believes that it was a violent death.
Thursday's prisoner exchange secured the release of seven Russian political prisoners.
