The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Berbock, said that the "principle of hope" will not be able to protect the country from Putin.

In an article for Bild, she writes that the footage of the Russian attack on the "Okhmatdit" children's hospital in Kyiv and many other footage of a full-scale war are imprinted in her memory: the siege of Mariupol, the massacre in Bucha. Despite this, Kyiv has decided to invite Moscow to the next peace summit because it is fighting for peace, Berbok notes.

"By canceling the peace conference, Putin is setting himself up: in front of the world public (including many states close to Russia), he does not want to admit that he wants Ukraine to submit to him. That he, as before, denies Ukraine the right to independent existence. To every peace initiative, to all our diplomatic work aimed at ending hostilities, Putin responds with escalation, new refusals of diplomacy. Not only for 893 days. And for years," the article says.

The minister emphasizes that Russia has systematically violated disarmament treaties and has also developed prohibited weapons that can be equipped with nuclear weapons, placing them in Kaliningrad. In addition, Moscow was preparing for and eventually starting the biggest war in Europe since 1945.

The principle of hope will not protect Germany from Putin's Russia, notes Berbok. According to her, protection will be ensured by supporting Ukraine and investing in its own security, including the deployment of far-reaching American weapons systems.

"We need a reliable deterrent against Russia so that it does not dare to do this. A deterrent that will also protect Poles, Baltics and Finns – our partners who directly border Russia and have seen it apply hybrid border measures in recent months. Because if we do not rely on the principle of hope, then it is not only about the safety of Mariupol, Buchi and the Ohmatdyt hospital. It is also about the security of Poland, Finland and the Baltic states. And their children's hospitals," she added.
