Mercedes-Benz will reduce production of premium sedans S-Class and EQS due to falling demand. Both models are manufactured at Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, which usually operates in two shifts. In October, the production site will be transferred to one shift.
"We are constantly optimizing our production network and using its high flexibility to respond to fluctuations and changing framework conditions due to geopolitical, micro- and macroeconomic developments and to remain competitive," Mercedes said in a statement published by Handelsblatt.
Sales of the S-Class sedan fell 22% in the first half of the year, with just 28 cars delivered to customers between January and June. The German automaker said in a statement that the plant that makes the S-Class and EQS is flexible, and if the brand needs to go back to two shifts in the future, it can do so in a matter of weeks.
Some potential buyers of the S-Class sedan may also be waiting for an updated model that should see the light of day as early as next year.
