China's special forces showed off electric skateboards, jet surfboards and other gadgets during a combat demonstration. The event was televised on Thursday.
According to Business Insider, China's state-run military television broadcast a live-fire exercise held at the Nanchang Infantry Academy in Jiangxi to commemorate the 97th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army.
In a televised segment, several soldiers from the Jiaolong Commandos, an elite amphibious unit of the Chinese navy, were shown riding jet-powered surfboards in a lake. One paratrooper launched a sparrow-like winged drone.
Later, several commandos armed with assault rifles emerged from behind a line of trees on motorized skateboards, which a state television announcer said were electric.
As they raced down the paved road, one commando at the head of the group held a drone that looked like a giant eagle. The drone eventually took off when he tossed it into the air while piloting his skateboard.
As they entered the firing range, one of the soldiers fired a hand-held drone with four small propellers, which crashed into a wall and exploded.
The commandos moved through the field on their skateboards, shooting at targets and launching drones. After the training operation, the group left in a pickup truck.
Other televised demonstrations included the use of a jetpack similar to one tested by Gravity Industries for the UK's Royal Marines, a surveillance quadcopter and a remote-controlled drone that tore apart a paper target.
