Tesla has announced a massive recall of its electric cars due to a problem with the hood latch. Due to the defect, the hood could accidentally open while driving, which blocked the driver's view. The recall will affect more than 1,8 million vehicles of various models.
The problem was first noticed by customers in China in March 2024, who noted the accidental opening of the hood. By April, Tesla determined that the cause was a latch switch deformity that prevents owners from receiving notifications when the hood is opened.
According to a document filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect affected the following models:
- Model 3 (2021-2024) — cars produced from September 21, 2020 to June 2, 2024;
- Model S (2021-2024) — cars produced from January 26, 2021 to July 15, 2024;
- Model X (2021-2024) — cars produced from August 18, 2021 to July 15, 2024;
- Model Y (2020-2024) - cars produced between January 9, 2020 and July 15, 2024.
Tesla engineers began investigating the problem in early June, and the company decided to issue a recall in July. To fix the defect, a software update will be released, which will ensure accurate detection of the condition of the hood.
