One cubic millimeter of the human brain stores more data than thousands of modern laptops. These are the results of research by experts from Harvard University and Google.

In the course of the study, scientists created the only complete three-dimensional reconstruction of the neural circuit of the human brain to date. The results of the work are described in detail in Science.

In a tiny cube of brain tissue, the researchers found 57 neurons, 000 millimeters of blood vessels and an astonishing 230 million connections between brain cells, called synapses.

The data contained in this tiny piece of temporal lobe cortex is a staggering 1400 terabytes.

For comparison, the average PC user can have one terabyte of memory on their device.

The sample was taken from a patient with epilepsy, so the researchers don't know if these unusual structures are related to the disease or just random neurological quirks.

This is the main goal of the field called "connectomics" - to create complete neural circuits that show how trillions of synaptic connections give rise to our thoughts, behaviors and brain disorders. Creating these maps is an extremely difficult task that researchers have been solving for almost a decade in collaboration with artificial intelligence experts from Google.

The recently published diagram of the mouse cerebral cortex is an important milestone, but it is only the tip of the iceberg in brain research. To fully image the entire mouse brain at such a high resolution of synapses would require replicating their efforts 1000 times.
