The company's Senior Vice President Hong Park met with Samsung Health advisory board members for a keynote discussion on blood sugar monitoring and the integration of artificial intelligence into wearable devices.
According to the discussion, it is expected that Samsung may include a blood sugar (also called blood glucose) monitor in the upcoming series Galaxy Watch 7. Many wearables, including Apple, are also reportedly working on a health tracking feature on their devices. This is because blood sugar monitors can help people with diabetes as well as those without diabetes who want to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Earlier this January, Hong Pak hinted at blood sugar monitoring in future wearable devices. This is because they are able to measure the parameter continuously. In addition, they are also non-invasive, eliminating the need to puncture the skin and draw blood, making things easier for patients. Therefore, blood sugar monitoring is expected to be a significant advance in future wearable devices.
Samsung is not mentioned in the press release Galaxy Watch 7. But it's increasingly likely that a future offering will include a blood sugar sensor. It remains to be seen whether the South Korean brand will use it in all models. A company may classify a smartwatch as an electronic device rather than a medical device for regulatory reasons.
