In Peru, scientists discovered a new species of animal - dwarf deer Pudella carlae - the first modern species discovered in the 21st century.
This is reported by Sci.News.
The new deer species Pudella carlae belongs to the neotropical deer group Odocoileini. But they combine in themselves two branches: Pudu mephistophiles from Peru, Ecuador and Colombia and Pudu puda from southern Chile and Argentina.
"This is the first living deer species discovered in the 21st century and the first from South America in more than 60 years", said Dr. Guillermo D'Elia from the Southern University of Chile.
