AIM Defense has introduced the Fractl:2 laser, which can burn through steel and destroy drones traveling at 100 km/h from several kilometers away. It can be controlled remotely.

When fully charged, the portable Fractl:2 laser has enough power to shoot down 50 drones, or can run continuously when plugged into a mains. AIM Defense co-founder Jessica Glenn said countering drones and other autonomous weapons systems is now "one of the most critically needed areas for militaries around the world."

“Over the past years, AIM Defense has worked with the defense innovation ecosystem to create a cost-effective, highly accurate, and easily deployable directed energy system. Fractl:2 is the culmination of these efforts,” said Ms. Glenn.

The company says Fractl:2 has a lower risk of blinding personnel and civilians than comparable high-power laser systems, and this risk is limited. Personnel hazard distances for Fractl:2 have been reduced by a factor of 100 compared to typical military directed energy systems with a wavelength of one micron.

AIM Defense co-founder Dr. Jay Daniel said the company has successfully demonstrated the system with "over 200 drone kills both indoors and outdoors over the past two years."

Thanks to safety improvements made to the Fractl system after each test, the one-micron version of the Fractl:1 is "several orders of magnitude safer than other directed energy systems" and the Fractl:2 is "the safest and most deployable high-power laser system in the world."
