Amber room

Originally located in the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg, Russia in the 18th century, the Amber Room mysteriously disappeared during World War II. After more than a decade of construction, the room was given to the Russian Emperor Peter the Great, who was known for his collection of unique and unusual objects. The Amber Room, created from more than six tons of amber panels with gold leaf and mirrors, was a symbol of wealth. It was considered a Russian and German masterpiece and at that time was called the "eighth wonder of the world" because of its incredible beauty and splendor. However, during the war, the Nazis looted the chamber and took its contents to Königsberg in Germany. There he went missing during the Allied bombing, leaving behind much speculation.

Although experts estimate the treasures to be worth $142 million, only two elements of the room have been recovered - an Italian stone mosaic panel that was found with the family of a soldier who helped pack the Amber Room - and other mosaic remnants that were found in the basement of Königsberg Castle. German art critic Alfred Rohde, who claimed to have taken care of the Amber Room after its theft, confirmed that it was kept in the castle, although no trace of it was found by the Soviets after the capture of the city.

Between 1979 and 2003, the Amber Room was remodeled in its original palace at a cost of $11 million. But what happened to most of the exquisite decorations in the Amber Room? We may never know.

The lost gold of the Incas

If you love playing online casinos, you've no doubt come across the iconic casino slot game, Gonzo's Quest. The game follows a Spanish conquistador in his search for the legendary city of El Dorado and is actually based on a very true story. The ancient Incas are said to have hidden their treasures from the Europeans during their invasions of South America in the lost city of Paititi. They seem to have done a very good job.

Researchers say that the golden city is located east of the Andes, somewhere in the jungles of the Peruvian rainforest, where many settlements have been found that have provided clear information about the existence of Paititi. Many mysteries remain surrounding the location and existence of this city and the legends that surround it. With the help of explorers, archaeologists and scientists, we can only hope that more will be discovered or at least understood in the future.

Captain Kidd's treasure

Have you ever played Adventures of Doubloon Island online casino slot? If so, this one is for you. Scottish sailor William Kidd famously went from a privateer who thought of pirates to a pirate himself! But when he was tried and executed in London in 1701, most of his looted fortune disappeared.

Legend has it that his treasures were buried in different parts of the globe. While some treasure hunters have named the Connecticut River in New England as a potential hiding place, others have been looking for islands off the coast of Canada, as well as the Dominican Republic, Japan and Vietnam. Amazingly, in 2015, a team led by marine archaeologist Barry Clifford found an ingot, believed to be silver, off the coast of Île Sainte-Marie (an island now known as Nosy Boraja) in Madagascar. The booty was presented to the President of Madagascar and was believed to be part of Captain Kidd's treasure.

Unfortunately, only a few months after the discovery, UNESCO's scientific and technical advisory body reported that the ingot was 95 percent lead, suggesting that the wreckage was likely part of the Port of Sainte-Marie structures. This means that none of Kidd's greatest treasures have ever been found.
