Dangerous weather phenomena in Ukraine

57

The climate of Ukraine is moderately continental. It is characterized by hot summers, frosty winters and a small amount of precipitation during the year. But even such a generally favorable climate can sometimes manifest itself in dangerous weather phenomena. They can arise suddenly and cause damage not only to the infrastructure of cities and agriculture, but also to the population. Dangerous atmospheric phenomena include showers and thunderstorms, hail, drought, dust storms, fogs and blizzards.

Showers and thunderstorms

Showers are very often accompanied by hail, thunderstorms and gusty winds (storms). These weather phenomena are formed due to the passage of a cold atmospheric front or as a result of warming and rising surface layers of air.

Showers, thunderstorms and hailstorms occur throughout the country, but most often in the southeastern regions, the Carpathians and the Crimea. In some cases, during a heavy downpour, the monthly rate of precipitation for a specific area may fall. Prolonged downpours sometimes lead to flooding of rivers, damage to crops and homes.

Drought

As a rule, droughts occur in the southern regions of Ukraine and in the north of Crimea. They arise due to long-term high air temperature and long-term absence of precipitation. Droughts are accompanied by dry and hot winds (dry winds), as well as dust storms.

Sukhove most often occur in Mykolaiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Donetsk regions, especially in August.

Dust storms

Dust storms are usually observed from the beginning of spring to the beginning of autumn, and in the south of Ukraine - even in winter when there is no snow. The causes of this weather phenomenon are drought and strong wind. It is the wind that blows the smallest particles of dust and sand from the surface of the earth, carrying them to considerable distances.

Dust storms can last from several tens of minutes to several days. Such weather prevents the movement of transport and is fraught with losses for agriculture.

Fogs

In the cold period of the year, due to high humidity, fogs are formed. The greatest amount of fog is observed in the mountains, in the northern and western parts of the country, as well as in the coastal areas. The average number of foggy days per year in major cities of Ukraine is:

  • to Kyiv — 35 days;
  • in Kharkov — 59 days;
  • in Simferopol — 66 days.

Fog creates a dangerous situation on the roads: visibility can decrease to 50 m.

Snowstorms

Blizzards are often accompanied by strong gusty winds, and sometimes freezing rain, which leads to the formation of ice. The weather phenomenon occurs as a result of the movement of Atlantic and Mediterranean cyclones.

In Ukraine, the northeast of the country is most prone to blizzards. On average, there are 20 to 25 blizzard days in this area per hour. Also, the probability of the appearance of a blizzard increases with the elevation of the terrain. This pattern is observed in the Carpathians, Crimea, the Azov Upland and the Donetsk Range.
