A floor cushion is a great way to add extra seating when you don't have room for chairs. This accessory will be appropriate to comfortably seat all guests, for board games with friends or watching movies together. This pillow also brings a boho vibe to your living space. Can't you imagine this gorgeous velvet floor pillow in your bedroom, living room, or even a college dorm? Why buy a floor pillow, if it is so easy to make it yourself with a sewing machine! Join us for this fun and easy tutorial on making your own floor pillow.

For this sewing project, we chose one of the soft, plush polyester upholstery fabrics. We think that the pile and shine of this material will also give the floor pillow a touch of vintage. But you can use any type of upholstery fabric you want! Just keep in mind that if you use a patterned fabric, it will be a little difficult to match the pattern on all sides of the pillow. You may need to purchase additional yards of fabric if you want the pattern to match and look perfect. The finished dimensions of our floor pillow will be 76 centimeters squared, for the front side. And about 15 centimeters for the side part. We will sew the pillow on an industrial sewing machine, but a household model will also work. If we don't have a sewing machine yet, we recommend getting one as soon as possible, because you will be able to sew many different home textiles, not only pillows. The best place to buy a sewing machine is the most reliable and convenient one online store of sewing machines Seastar.

1. Cut two square fabric panels measuring 79 centimeters. Additional 3 centimeters are intended for the formation of a seam allowance of 1.5 centimeters on all four sides. Next, cut 2 strips 18 centimeters wide and 163 centimeters long for the side part of the pillow. Save the fabric scraps for the buttons you will make later. Then sew the two strips together. Fold them together so that the front sides (velvet sides) face each other. Sew both short ends together with a 1.5 cm seam allowance, forming a large loop. Make a backstitch at the beginning and end of each strip to secure the stitches in place.

2. Then take one of the front panels of the pillow and attach it with sewing pins to the long side part with the front sides together. Make sure that the two seams you sewed the two pieces of pillow side fabric together line up with the two corners of the front panel. You need these seams to be in two corners of the pillow.

3. On your sewing machine, sew the front panel to the side loop with a 1.5 cm seam allowance. Do not forget to fasten the stitches at the beginning and at the end to secure the stitches in place. When you reach each corner of the pillow, lower the needle into the fabric, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the foot, and continue sewing. Repeat this process for the second panel, attaching it right sides together to the second edge of the side loop. However, this time leave a hole of 12-15 centimeters on one side of the pillow to insert the filler.

4. Using the left opening, put your hand inside to push the pillow face out. Fill the pillow with any amount of soft filler. For example, we used about 3 kilograms of synthetic polyester fiber. When filling the pillow, carefully squeeze the fibrous filler into the corners. This will give a more beautiful look and greater stiffness to the floor pillow. Over time, the fiber filling will condense, so if in doubt, we suggest stuffing the pillow more tightly than you think you need. After stuffing the pillow, we sewed the remaining hole by hand with a hidden seam, using a special curved needle. If you want, you can sew a zipper into this hole if you want.

5. Make 10 buttons from the remaining scraps of material. Just pull over the pre-purchased buttons with fabric. It's easy to do. When your buttons are ready, you need to add 5 buttons on each side of the pillow. Measure and mark the exact center of the floor cushion. Measure approximately 20 centimeters from each side and mark the position of each button. Repeat this process for the other side.

6. Thread a long thread into a long manual sewing needle and tie the ends with a knot. Pierce the center of the pillow and exit from the second marked center, but do not pull the thread all the way through. Leave about half the length of thread on the side you pierced. Insert a needle into the eye of one of the buttons and pass the needle back through the pillow, pulling it out to the other side, with an offset of about 4 millimeters. Do not pass the needle straight through the center again. Insert the second button into the needle, then take two ends of the thread (one with the needle, the other with the end of the loop) and tie three grandmother's knots. Then tie a few knots to keep the buttons in place. Cut the thread around the edge of the button. Repeat this process for the remaining buttons.

7. Finally, it's time to create the most attractive part of this floor pillow - beautiful quilted edges! I chose the color of the thread that matches the color of your fabric as much as possible. We will use a manual curved needle. Pierce the fabric with a needle and thread at a distance of about 4 centimeters from the upper edge of the pillow. And bring the needle out about 4 centimeters below the side seam. Then move the needle along the side seam about 2-2.5 centimeters and pierce the fabric with the needle, bringing it to the top, about 2-2.5 centimeters to the right of where you started. Repeat this process on all sides of the pillow. In this way, you will make a beautiful seam and achieve the necessary decorative effect.

And yes. Your floor pillow is ready! Now you know the process of making it on a sewing machine, and the next time you can easily change the dimensions or experiment with upholstery fabric and filler to get a completely new result.
