Touch screen and display: what is the difference, principle of operation and characteristics

Touchscreen and display are information input-output devices. If necessary, you can buy these and others spare parts for phones and tablets on vibroplus.com.ua. They are transparent plates. Despite the external similarity, they have different purpose, principle of operation and characteristics. They can be implemented both in the form of separate, independent elements (layers) and in the form of a single element of the device design (touch screen).

Features of the touchscreen

A touchscreen is a data input device. It is a transparent plate that reacts to external physical influences (the touch of a person's fingers, a stylus, and other objects) and transmits data to the device in the form of coordinates.
Depending on the principle of operation, resistive, capacitive and other, less common types are distinguished.

  1. Resistive touchscreen consists of two plates of glass and flexible plastic. Internal elements have a special coating. The plates are separated from each other by a thin layer of dielectric. When pressing on a flexible plastic membrane, as a result of the narrowing of the layer, the resistive surfaces are closed at the point of contact. Touch coordinates are determined by the controller, which registers the change in resistance.
  2. Capacitive touchscreen is a transparent glass panel with a resistive conductive coating. Electrodes that apply voltage to the resistive surface are placed at the corners of the touchscreen. When touching the surface, current leakage occurs at the point of contact. At the same time, the closer the touch is to the electrode, the greater the current. With the help of sensors on the electrodes, the change in this force is recorded. The received data is sent to a special controller for determining the coordinates.

It is more often used in modern devices touchscreen for smartphones projection-capacitive type. Unlike the usual variations, on the inner side of this product, instead of a resistive coating, a network of electrodes is applied, in which the capacitive voltage changes when touched.
Such touchscreens are durable, have higher transparency, a wide temperature range and the possibility of multi-touch.

Display Features

Display is a device for outputting graphic information (images). It has a more complex working principle, electronics and a structure in which elements are arranged in layers. LCD (liquid crystal) and OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays are widely used in modern devices.
The principle of operation of the LCD display based on the property of liquid crystals to change the flow of light passing through them. This happens under the influence of tension. The image is formed by separate blocks (pixels), each of which, in turn, consists of fragments (subpixels) reflecting the main components of the gamut - red, blue and green. The change in brightness of the subpixels occurs as a result of the voltage applied to the liquid crystals.
In OLED displays a matrix of millions of miniature LEDs is used, each of which represents a separate pixel. Due to the reduction of the number of elements, this technology allows to achieve higher pixel density indicators. The peculiarity of these displays is high image resolution, natural (correct) black color, and low energy consumption.
