Neurological disorders, anxiety and depression: doctors talked about the consequences of the coronavirus

The number of those who have contracted the coronavirus in Ukraine is already more than 1,5 million people. And this is only the data of official statistics. According to the WHO, the virus does not cause specific symptoms in 80% of people and is mild or asymptomatic. However, more and more often there are reports of severe consequences of the disease in the form of neurological disorders, increased anxiety and even depression.

Despite the fact that people in the world have been familiar with this virus for more than a year, it has not yet been fully studied. The consequences of it especially leave questions: experts say that it will be possible to assess the damage caused by the virus to human health no earlier than in 5 years.

According to the WHO, 99% of people who have had the coronavirus experience the following symptoms within 2-3 months:

  1. loss of concentration;
  2. memory impairment;
  3. depressed state;
  4. poor sleep;
  5. loss of appetite;
  6. anxiety;
  7. numbness of limbs;
  8. headache.

Experts attribute this to a number of reasons. As you know, the coronavirus primarily affects the lungs, which can cause respiratory failure and, as a result, hypoxia of the brain. Insufficient oxygen supply to the brain leads to the development of neurological problems, such as numbness of the limbs, headaches, paresis and even paralysis.

The second reason for the occurrence of neurological consequences is related to a violation of the hormonal background. During the disease, the production of tryptophan, an amino acid involved in the production of vitamin B, which ensures the functioning of the nervous system, and serotonin, the hormone of joy, is suppressed. These disorders lead to a hormonal imbalance in general, which affects self-esteem and mood.

Doctors urge not to leave these symptoms without attention. If after 2-3 weeks one or more of the listed symptoms persist, you should make an appointment with a doctor. The doctor will prescribe additional examinations of the body to reveal the physiological consequences of the coronavirus, as well as prescribe supportive vitamin therapy, give recommendations on lifestyle and a special diet after the illness.
