What is a sea container?
A sea container resembles a large metal box and actually performs this function. Its task is to store and transport goods. This type of solution was first used at the beginning of the 20th century, that is, relatively long ago, but containers are still very popular. At first, these were only metal boxes, not adapted for stacking. Later they were modified and even became a subject of general use. Some of them are intended for traditional transportation, others for specialized ones. It is interesting that some containers are used as residential houses. Due to the fact that they can be freely combined and are quite durable, they are an excellent alternative to traditional residential houses.
What types of sea containers can be distinguished?
Transportation of sea containers is so widespread that many types can be distinguished. Containers are divided by length, which is measured in feet. The most common are 20 and 40 feet. A 20-foot container, as the name implies, is exactly 20 feet long. About 10 industrial and 11 European pallets can be placed in the cabin. As for the 40-foot container, in this case, the length is 40 feet, and it can accommodate 24 euro pallets and 21 industrial pallets, which allows transporting a huge amount of cargo. If necessary, you can use "High-Cube" containers, which have an increased height and are used when standard sizes are not enough.
It is also possible to select other types of containers with additional parameters. These include a reefer container in which cargo can be transported at a controlled temperature, and a tank-container for transporting liquid cargo.
What does the transportation of sea containers look like?
Despite its appearance, the transportation of sea containers is not complicated. For this you will need a suitable ship. Interestingly, such vessels can simultaneously receive even several thousand different containers. The most difficult part is the correct placement of the cargo both on the deck and below it. The whole vessel must be stable, so special attention is paid to the weight of individual containers. In this case, the rule is that the heaviest containers are placed at the bottom of the entire structure. However, deliveries are often combined, so if necessary, it is very problematic to unload the container from below.
