The starting point in the design and construction of the heating system is the decision about the method of heating the building, i.e. selection of the heat source (or sources) to be used. This decision must be made before the start of construction work, as it determines key construction issues.
They mainly include:
- the necessity (or absence) of dividing the boiler room and the requirements for its size and location, the location of chimneys, ventilation ducts, etc.;
- installation requirements on the receiving side (installation of radiators and/or panel heating);
- planned way of preparing hot water (DHW).
Necessity (or not) of the boiler room department
It is clear that, for example, a solid fuel boiler requires not only a large amount of space for a suitable chimney, but also a large space for storing fuel, which should not be difficult to transport to the boiler room.

For most investors, the choice between radiators and panel heating, that is, most often with underfloor heating, is primarily a matter of comfort, although some also realize the economic consequences.
A warm floor provides greater comfort thanks to a more favorable vertical distribution of temperature (warmer in the legs, cooler in the head). At the same time, this has a positive effect on home heating costs, since the temperature perceived as comfortable is actually 1-2 degrees lower than when heating a room with radiators, which reduces the need for heat by 5-10%.
However, warm floor systems have limitations, which primarily include the so-called barrier of thermal characteristics. Rooms with high heat losses (more than 80 W / m2) and rooms in which the surface of the floor heating is limited due to its cluttered equipment (for example, bathrooms) should usually be heated with heaters. They are also indispensable where a comfortable temperature needs to be maintained only for part of the day (a warm floor is not very suitable for this due to large thermal inertia).
In addition, although ceramic tiles are not the only choice when it comes to finishing a floor with heating, classic parquet is out of the question, as well as covering the floor with carpet.
In practice, warm floors are usually installed in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, lobbies and guest rooms, and traditional radiators are chosen in bedrooms (especially those located on the upper floor).
It should be emphasized that the choice between underfloor heating and radiator heating is not always a matter of preference. The efficiency of a gas condensing boiler connected only to radiators will be several percent lower than theoretically possible, which is acceptable.

Constant heating of the boiler is an extremely inconvenient solution, and heating water with electric heaters is very expensive.
